This study aims to explain the distinction created by art retail spaces in the onset of the culture industry. Three art retail spaces in Metro Manila--Cubao Expo in Quezon City, Escolta Saturday X Future Market in Manila, and Salcedo Art in the Park in Makati--offer art such as paintings, prints, photographs, pots, sculptures, and other bric-a-brac. Even if these art retail spaces exist to promote certain advocacies, such as art, education, history, and heritage, or counter consumerism and mass production by the general public, there is enough reason to believe that these production by the general public, that these spaces show how group of people create a certain distinction through their use of the said spaces. This study analyzes and critiques how aesthetics standards or aesthethic choices are made in the society given the context of distinction that art retail spaces present. These analyses will be used to describe or document aspects of the Philippine society and culture through a qualitative research methodology. This study employs a reflective dialogic method that comprises interviews paired with empirical and participant observations, which are guided by interpretive social science and critical theory.
